Tokinoba means “a field of time.” It is a photographic series in which multiple views, taken from the same fixed camera position at different times, are composited into a single image.

Where Sakumi Hagiwara’s serial photographs from a fixed viewpoint reveal the passage of time through differences among multiple images of the same place or subject, this series folds the distinct times contained in those photographs into a single frame. A night sky and a daytime city, or different conditions of light and weather—landscapes that could not ordinarily coexist—are made present within one place.

The series also refers to the contradiction between day and night presented in René Magritte’s The Empire of Light, while drawing on photography’s capacity to record moments that actually existed. The completed landscape never existed as such, yet every element within it belongs to a time that genuinely appeared at the same location.

By making different times simultaneous within a single image, the series unsettles the habitual assumption that one place belongs to one present, and reconsiders landscape as a field in which multiple times remain latent. It is an attempt to spatialize time through photography and to reconfigure how place and the present are perceived.
