《KIRI》は、霧によって風景が変容する過程を、定点から捉える映像・インスタレーションのシリーズである。幼少期に群馬で経験した濃霧は、見慣れた世界が一瞬にして別の場所へ変わる原体験となった。

本シリーズは、萩原朔美による約8分の16ミリ映画《KIRI》（1972）との対話から生まれた。萩原作品では、撮影中に偶然霧が晴れ、真っ白な画面の奥から山々の像が徐々に結ばれていく。一方、私の撮影では予期せず霧が濃くなり、山の像が次第に白の中へほどかれていった。結果として対照的な運動をもつ二つの作品は、映像が完成された像を記録するだけでなく、時間のなかで像が生まれ、変容し、消えていく現象そのものを示す媒体であることを露わにしている。

撮影地には、特定の人物や記憶、土地の歴史と結びついた場所を選ぶ。ここで霧は、対象を覆い隠す幕ではなく、風景と鑑賞者との関係を組み替える媒体である。既知の風景が輪郭を失い、像としてほどけていく過程に立ち会うことで、鑑賞者は見えなくなった場所の存在をかえって意識し、世界の現れ方と「見る」という行為との関係をあらためて捉え直す。

KIRI is a series of video and installation works that observes, from a fixed viewpoint, the process through which fog transforms a landscape. The dense fog I experienced during my childhood in Gunma became a formative encounter in which the familiar world suddenly turned into another place.

The series emerged from a dialogue with Sakumi Hagiwara’s approximately eight-minute 16mm film KIRI (1972). In Hagiwara’s work, the fog unexpectedly clears during filming, and the image of distant mountains gradually takes form out of an entirely white screen. In my own filming, by contrast, the fog unexpectedly thickened, and the image of the mountain slowly dissolved into white. Though the two works ultimately move in opposite directions, both reveal that the moving image does more than record a completed view: it is a medium in which an image comes into being, transforms, and disappears through time.

Each filming location is selected for its connection to a particular person, memory, or local history. Here, fog is not a veil that merely conceals the subject, but a medium that reconfigures the relationship between landscape and viewer. By witnessing a familiar landscape lose its contours and unravel as an image, the viewer becomes more acutely aware of the continued presence of the place that can no longer be seen, and is invited to reconsider the relationship between the way the world appears and the act of seeing itself.
