Biography
石原康臣
1976年、群馬県生まれ。東京と群馬を拠点に活動する現代美術家。
高校時代から映像制作を始め、多摩美術大学では萩原朔美ゼミに所属し、実験映画、ビデオアート、ドキュメンタリーを学ぶ。在学中に出会った現代美術家の共同アトリエ「スタジオ食堂」に出入りし、展覧会やパフォーマンスの記録撮影、作品制作に関わるなかで、関心を映画から現代美術へと広げた。
同時期には、暗黒舞踏の創始者・土方巽が設立したアスベスト館に所属し、元藤燁子の指導を受ける。そこで培った、身体を自己表現のための手段としてではなく、空間や周囲の気配を受け取る媒体として捉える視点は、現在のインスタレーションにおける、鑑賞者の身体と場所との関係へとつながっている。
卒業後は約20年間、大学をはじめとする高等教育機関で映像教育に携わりながら制作を継続。その後、制作と研究に改めて向き合うために大学を離れ、京都芸術大学大学院へ進学し、2024年に芸術研究科修士課程を修了した。地域の歴史や文化を調査し、土地に蓄積された時間を作品として立ち上げる方法を研究した。
近年は日本各地の芸術祭や文化施設において、映像、写真、光、音などを用い、土地の記憶や環境、既存の建築と関わりながら、場所そのものの知覚を変化させるインスタレーションを展開している。
ISHIHARA Yasuomi
Born in Gunma Prefecture in 1976, Yasuomi Ishihara is a contemporary artist based in Tokyo and Gunma.
He began making films while still in high school and later studied experimental film, video art, and documentary filmmaking in Sakumi Hagiwara’s seminar at Tama Art University. During his studies, he became involved with Studio Shokudo, a collective studio for contemporary artists, where he documented exhibitions and performances and participated in the production of artworks. Through these experiences, his interests expanded from cinema into contemporary art.
Around the same period, he joined Asbestos-kan, founded by Tatsumi Hijikata, the originator of ankoku butoh, and studied under Akiko Motofuji. The perspective he developed there—understanding the body not simply as a means of self-expression, but as a medium for sensing space and the atmosphere of its surroundings—continues to inform his installations and his exploration of the relationship between the viewer’s body and place.
After graduating, Ishihara continued his artistic practice while teaching moving-image practice in higher education for approximately twenty years. He later left his academic position to renew his engagement with artistic practice and research, and entered the graduate program at Kyoto University of the Arts. He completed his master’s degree in the Graduate School of Arts in 2024, researching ways of translating regional histories and cultures, as well as the layers of time accumulated within a place, into works of art.
In recent years, he has presented installations at art festivals and cultural institutions across Japan. Using video, photography, light, and sound, he creates works that engage with local memory, environmental conditions, and existing architecture, altering the way a place itself is perceived.
