《赤い部屋》は、土地の歴史を内包する空間を赤い光と霧によって変容させ、日常の風景の背後にある生命の記憶を立ち上げるインスタレーション・シリーズである。

着想の起点は、長野県東御市で出会った、養蚕に用いられていた燻蒸室にある。そこは、蚕を病気から守るため、養蚕道具を薬剤の煙で殺菌する空間であった。絹織物は蚕の生命を介して生み出されるが、完成した絹を目にするとき、その背景にある生命を意識することは少ない。燻蒸室との出会いを通して、産業や日常のなかで見えなくなった生命の存在を、もう一度知覚可能にすることを考えた。

本シリーズにおいて、赤は生命を想起させる色である。霧は燻蒸室を満たしていた薬剤の煙から発想したものであり、見慣れた空間の輪郭を揺るがす媒体である。建築や物、産業、自然環境に刻まれた記憶を取り込み、鑑賞者の身体をその内部へ導くことで、何気ない日常の風景にも、さまざまな生命と営みの歴史が折り重なっていることを再認識する場をつくり出す試みである。

Red Room is an installation series that transforms spaces bearing traces of local history through red light and fog, bringing forth memories of life concealed behind everyday landscapes.

The series originated in a fumigation room once used for sericulture that I encountered in Tōmi, Nagano. There, tools and equipment were sterilized with chemical smoke to protect silkworms from disease. Although silk textiles are produced through the lives of silkworms, we rarely consider the life behind the finished material. Encountering this room led me to consider how lives rendered invisible within industry and everyday life might once again be made perceptible.

In this series, red evokes the color of life. The fog derives from the chemical smoke that once filled the fumigation room and functions as a medium that unsettles the contours of familiar space. By incorporating memories inscribed in architecture, objects, industry, and the natural environment, and by drawing the viewer’s body into the transformed space, the work attempts to create a place in which we may recognize anew the many lives and histories of human activity layered within seemingly ordinary landscapes.
